Should I Buy the Govee Lights From Costco?

Phoraa Lighting— Bay Area install team September 22, 2026 5 min read

It is one of the most common questions we get. Costco runs a good price on Govee outdoor lights, the box looks right, and it seems like an easy way to save a few hundred dollars before the install. Sometimes it is. Often it isn't, and the reason has nothing to do with price.

Costco sells the Elite, not the Pro

The sets sold at Costco are the Govee Outdoor Lights Elite, an older generation than the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro we install. They look similar in the box and run from the same app, but they are not the same product.

  • The Elite line is dimmer than the Pro.
  • It is less durable over years of Bay Area sun and winter rain.
  • It is far less flexible to work with during installation.

The real limitation: Elite can't be spliced

This is the part that decides most jobs. Elite strands can't be spliced, so any break in your roofline can't be bridged with a jump cable. A break is anything the lights have to skip: a chimney, a recessed section, a stretch of wall between two runs, a garage separated from the main roofline.

On the Pro line we simply run a hidden jump cable across the gap and the light picks up cleanly on the other side. With Elite, the gap stays a gap, which leaves dark sections and an installation that simply doesn't look professional.

About homemade jump cables

Some companies do splice Elite strands using their own products and cables. We don't recommend it. It usually reduces the lifetime of the lights and it voids the warranty, and in our experience it causes problems down the road.

As experts who install these systems every week, our recommendation is simple: go with the Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro. They are brighter, more durable, and they can be spliced properly, which means your roofline gets a continuous, finished look with the warranty fully intact.

When Costco Govee lights are a good buy

If your home has one continuous run with no breaks in the roofline, Elite lights can be installed and still look great. Plenty of single-story homes and simple two-story fronts fall into that category, and in those cases buying the set at Costco is a genuine saving.

When you should return them

If your roofline has breaks, the honest answer is to return the Elite set and go with the Govee Pro, which can be spliced for a clean, seamless result. It costs more up front and it is the difference between lights that look installed and lights that look worked around.

"We would rather tell you to return a box than install something you'll look at every night and wish you had done differently."

Not sure which one your home needs?

Send us your address before you buy. We look at your roofline, tell you honestly whether an Elite set will work on your home, and recommend the Pro only when the layout actually requires it. Every home is different, so if you have any questions at all, just ask us first.
